I read an interesting article in the latest edition of the AARP Magazine titled, “When Your Body Attacks Itself”, by Jessica Migala, regarding the increased incidence of auto-immune diseases, particularly in people 50 and over. Being someone with an auto-immune condition (Hashimoto’s), this topic is of personal interest and always makes my ears perk up. In particular, the inset box “The Big Chill” pointed out the deleterious effect of chronic stress on auto-immune flare ups. No real surprise but it still made me stop and read it because chronic stress and I are old acquaintances.
So, how many of the suggested techniques am I actively utilizing to quiet my mind? (from Michelle Dossett MD)
*Meditation – yes
*Yoga or Stretching – no
*Tai Chi – no
*Controlled Breathing – sometimes but I usually wait too long before I try
*Physical Activity – yes
This list represents suggestions and is certainly not the only set of healthy techniques. Finding what works is a personal quest. The underlying message for all of us, though, is to engage in a consistent, focused practice to quiet our minds and bodies. In quieting both mind and body, we have a chance to regulate our nervous systems and this, ultimately, supports our overall well-being.
Apart from meditation and swimming, I go to the beach daily, as well as do mixed-media art journaling. This works well for me. What do you do to dial down your own volume? What has worked well for you? I’d love to hear your feedback.
