I heard the sounds of sadness in my sister’s voice yesterday, as she told me that a close relative had passed away suddenly. A lifetime of memories sprang forth, as she spoke about her love for this special aunty of ours.
So, it seemed only fitting to include this dear aunty in a Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) tribute that my friend, Winnie, and I had planned today. Winnie had baked Pan de Muerto and I had brought marigolds, a candle and Abuelita hot chocolate. Neither of us had grown up with this tradition but we appreciate it, nonetheless. “Cultural appreciation” we call it.
We lit the candle and set the marigolds down around the Pan, savoring the sight of the fiery blooms spread out on the table. As we dunked our bread into the rich sweetness of the chocolate concoction, sprinkled with cinnamon, we enjoyed a moment of reflection. I envision many others, both here and abroad, will be doing something similar in honor of their loved ones in the coming days.
Later on, Winnie and I took the marigolds down to the beach, each of us with a bunch in hand. Silently, we sent our blessings to our departed loved ones (human, canine and feline), throwing a bright orange bloom into the water with each tribute. The current slowly moved the blooms out to open waters, as if connecting us with our departed loved ones, wherever they may be. I so hope they get there, wherever there is.
Rituals can be so powerful. Do you have any that are meaningful to you?
