Suck It Up

How many times have you told yourself, been told by someone or told someone else “don’t talk about it”? Essentially, suck it up, let it go, move on, act like nothing happened, don’t rock the boat.

There are many reasons why we shut down, are shut down or try to shut others down. The list of potential influences is long. Societal, familial, cultural, gender, professional and/or personal norms exert a significant influence on our decision to confront or avoid the emotional fallout from challenging experiences.

Admittedly, avoidance can be the right course of action in some situations. It can actually be protective and keep us safe. Temporarily…

The emotional residue of our past challenges builds up. It’s like a clog that eventually backs up. What we don’t deal with always comes out, in one way or another, whether we want to admit it or not. It can seep into each and every nook and cranny of our lives and impact our healthy functioning.

-What story is inside of you that hasn’t seen the light of day yet?
-How has holding it inside impacted you?
-In what way might you give yourself permission to dismantle the self limiting messages: it’s scary, I should be over this by now, it’s embarrassing to talk about it, I should be stronger/smarter than this, it happened a long time ago, other people have it worse etc etc etc
-How might you feel with less weight to carry inside?
