That’s A Terrible Idea

There’s a line in Under The Tuscan Sun about taking a seemingly terrible idea and bringing it to fruition…making something far-fetched come to life.

Sometimes, the word “terrible” is used when what we really mean is more along the lines of “I can’t imagine doing that” or “I don’t even know how I would do that.” It’s like yellow caution tape that we put up so we don’t step inside the exploratory zone. We look, from the outside in, with both trepidation and a bit of wanderlust.

“That’s a terrible idea” can also be used when others give us feedback about something they can’t imagine us doing. Their feedback passes through their own filter and shrouds our idea in doubt.

Of course, some ideas are, indeed, terrible. They represent a highly-likely negative outcome. It’s wise to recognize those when possible and avoid that risk.

However, I’m talking about ideas that contain seeds of greatness but are cloaked by a fear of the unknown.

  • Do you have any of those?
  • What would it take to bring one of these “terrible” ideas into being?
  • What are the pros and cons of taking action AND of not taking action? (that’s called decisional balancing)
