When Things Don’t Go According To (My) Plan

I like predictability. I don’t like surprises (with the exception of the fun ones). I “think” thatI’d like to know what’s to come, so that I can be prepared.

Admittedly, I have a fairly linear way of looking at things. I like to imagine a sequence of events to get a sense of how things will turn out. Step A leads to Step B which leads to Step C, etc etc.

I’m not sure why I still do this. In my 57 years, I have had many lived experiences when nothing I planned or predicted came to fruition. If I have had to work hard on anything, it has been my attachment to this linear thought process and accept the way in which life has unfolded. Life isn’t a straight line for any of us.

Someone asked me recently, “what might you need or like to let go of moving forward?”  I created this art journaling piece to answer that for myself. The straight lines in the background represent my linear orientation. The foreground contains a more circuitous, spiral image, which is an accurate representation of my real life. And, I’d let go of the chatter that’s fills my mind so often and get quiet…

What might you like to let go of, as you move forward? What no longer serves you well? If you were to create an image, what would your background contain and what would your foreground show?
