This Ain’t My First Rodeo…

Within American culture, this popular idiomatic expression is used when a challenge arises and strikes a cord of remembrance. People say “this ain’t my first rodeo” to mean that they have a measure of confidence about how to manage it.

Sometimes, though, we forget that we’ve faced similar situations in the past. We can get mired in something and feel a bit unmoored by what appears unfamiliar to us. This can breed a host of uncomfortable emotions.

In the last few weeks, I’ve experienced this, myself. As I’ve navigated situations that have left me feeling a bit unsure and questioning which way forward, I’ve had to remind myself: look back

-What have I experienced in the past that might be similar?

-Anything about this that looks or feels like that?

While we don’t live in the past, we can learn from it. Yesterday’s trials can yield today’s solutions. Oftentimes, if we look closely, we can identify things that will, ultimately, be applicable.

So, take a moment to scan. Mine for information…

-How did I handle that situation?

-What worked well and not so well?

-What resources did I call on?

-What did I learn?

-How might that help me now?

Look back for a reference point. It doesn’t have to be an exact match. Similar, in some fashion, is enough…Then, look for transferable strategies, tools, resources…a path out and forward.

That’s actionable…that’s empowerment.
